How to secure an accident site

The FN video series shows this time the correct handling of the safety vest and warning triangle. What should I do in the event of a cardiac arrest, what happens in a motorcycle accident? Everyone had to go through the first aid course - but that very life-saving knowledge is often rusty. We help you.

First means to act quickly and courageously when a person is in need. What to do when, experts explain in the first aid series of the Furth news. In videos, they demonstrate important steps. After our contribution about the stroke, this time it is about securing an accident site.

If a car remains in the middle of the road, the same applies as after a traffic accident: The relevant point must be secured immediately. "No one is helped if a small accident causes a major accident." Damage control and self-protection are therefore a priority. First responders must ensure that not (even more) people are harmed.

What tools do I have to have in the car? In addition, where on board should they be?
Although only the warning triangle and a reflective safety vest for the driver are required. However, Rosenstein recommends carrying, as many vests as there are seats in the vehicle. They are best placed under the seat, in the glove compartment or in the door compartments. Only when they are at hand, they can already be covered when getting out. The risk that coming motorists could overlook the helper thus reduced the same when disembarking.

If there is no storage, location already provided by the manufacturer in the car for the warning triangle, Rosenstein advises to fix it to the sidewall of the boot with a Velcro strip, for example. "So it does not slip other things that you drive around, and is in an emergency immediately at hand."

If I come now to an accident site - in which order do I proceed.
"First of all you secure your own vehicle by switching on the hazard warning lights, reducing the speed and - with a certain distance - putting yourself in front of the accident car. When you leave the vehicle, you pull on the safety vest, get the warning triangle out of the trunk, build it there, and then carry it at chest level to the point where you put it on the road. Next, make an emergency call to the Integrated Rescue Center - number 112 - and see if people are injured, so whether you need to and cannot afford first aid.

What do I need to know about setting up a warning triangle?
"First, you should know how to assemble your (!) Warning triangle," says Rosenstein and advises to practice these exercises once in peace. As far as the distance to the accident location is concerned, there is the following rule of thumb: "One says, as far away as the permitted maximum speed. That means 50 meters to the city, 100 meters to the outskirts of the city and 150 to 200 meters to the motorways, which should be traversed behind the crash barriers as far as possible. "If the accident occurred after a bend, the warning triangle should be set up clearly before the turn.

How do I know how long 50 or 100 meters are?
Anyone who struggles to estimate distances can either count his or her own steps, according to the expert. As a guide, but also offer the black and white Lei post on the roadside. "They always have a distance of 50 meters." The tip of the expert at the end: "But now, at this moment, just think: Where is now your warning triangle? Will you come now if you need it? In addition, how many reflective vests do you have? Are they enough? In addition, where in the car are they? "
