When the days get shorter again: tips for road traffic

Darkness, fog, temperatures near the frost limit – it’s a weather that traffic people have to face these days. Pedestrians need to wear safety vest to enhance visibility in this bad environment. Foliage on the road also makes the road slippery and the spotlight does not show the performance that it shows in dry weather due to spreading effects.

But not only seeing is important in the dark season. Particular attention should also be given to all road users to be "seen". Police superintendent Antje Freudenberg, police officer of the Luneburg / Liuchow-Dannenberg / Uele police inspectorate, said: "All traffic users should now drive their vehicles with their lights on. Not only motorists, but also all two-wheelers, especially the cyclists, significantly increase their safety in road traffic. "Bright clothes with reflectors, a good bicycle helmet and a traffic-safe two-wheeled bike made for even better visibility in the dark. The theme of light clothes applies in particular to pedestrians and not just for children.

Even wheelchair users can do something for their road safety. Since wheelchairs are usually not well lit, they should be equipped with additional reflectors. "A good idea is if a reflective vest, which should be carried by every driver in the vehicle, is hanged over the handles of the wheelchair. As a result, it is much more perceived by subsequent traffic. And if the wheelchair is pushed by a companion, it can cover the vest, "says Antje Freudenberg. It is also important that road users take longer trips, take the foot off the gas, and focus on the traffic, especially in the dark and in poor visibility conditions. People who might be bad in the dark should be aware of this and think about the purchase of a special night vision glasses.

To be accident-free from A to B, the vehicle must be safe. In the case of the car, especially fully functional headlights and by the coming spring winter tires with at least 1.6 millimeter profile depth, better still four millimeters, belong to it.

Ottoman Frederic’s, a specialist operator of the company Verges, says that in addition to the lighting system and mounted winter tires, "a cooling fluid suitable for the cool temperatures, winter cleaning water, fresh engine oil, a functioning battery, intact windshield wipers and also cleaned windows Vehicle and traffic safety ".

"The winter check with tire change and control of the lighting system is currently very well received," says Patel in reflective clothing. In order to increase traffic safety in autumn and winter, the traffic watch, together with many participating workshops, offers the free light test in October nationwide.

Children can’t be seen in the dark without reflective clothing

In autumn and winter children in road traffic are particularly vulnerable, a reflective vest can make children be seen and be safer. But for a safe way to school in the dark, rain and ice, parents can do a lot - even without "Taxi services".

They draw early in the morning: packed with heavy backpacks school children, on foot, by scooter, skateboard or bike. Located in the busy rush hour, it’s rain or shine - in the fall and winter, even at dusk or even in the dark. The danger of being overlooked in traffic is even greater than for adults for children.

In the dark season parents should look for in their children bright, best fluorescent or reflective clothing. This glow in the beam of the car up to 160 meters fluorescent materials in orange or yellow as well as large-area reflector strips are already prescribed for the market today satchel. Parents recognize this satchel on the DIN standard 58124 and appropriate safety clothing to the designation DIN EN 13356. But normal jackets, hats and bags can be easily retrofitted by reflective material figures or stripes or sews. For added security worry dangling "cat's eye" pendant whose additional movement particularly draws attention to itself?

Helpful in fashionable concerns that sometimes already have five-year refuse any cooperation, are fun experiments: the mother or the father has been raised in different clothing to the curb, trying the child in the car with the other parent, she or recognize him. The concrete experience helps the child to understand an otherwise abstract context.

For children aged six to eight years of close to other, if they themselves can see an illuminated car well, they assume that the driver sees them. Younger children interpret the spotlight often referred to as eyes that can see everything - like their own children's eyes. But even in the bright kids are hardly properly evaluate capable of distances and speeds. In darkness, it is virtually impossible for them. And the reaction time of children is about three times as long as the adult.

Training takes taxi
No wonder that more and more parents chauffeur their kids to school by car. A poll by the Forsa Institute showed that in 1970 made in Germany alone on the way to school 91 percent of primary school, in 2012 there were only 50 percent. But the family taxi is dangerous: On the way to school children come not only on foot or by bicycle to harm but also by the car. And the traffic is just too close to the schools where many children are traveling. In addition, it lacks many children to move, which in turn is important for the formation of psychomotor skills - a prerequisite for a safe movement in traffic.

Also, traffic psychologists call: Parents should trust their children something. Already six to seven year olds can handle the way to school alone. They exert to move in public space and to bring critical situations. "At first, parents should accompany their children and indicate possible harm," said Dr. Ralf, psychologist at TÜV NORD. However, children get distracted quickly and behave willing to take risks, especially in the company of other children.

"Often the children's attention diminishes when they feel safe and in the dark, fog or snow also very familiar paths are dangerous. It is therefore advisable to check from time to time whether the once learned permanently will be implemented. In particular, in the fall and winter, when dangerous in fog or snow also familiar ways parents should accompany the school children again and this particular attention to the traffic behavior." Especially in the dark winter months, it is important to let children wear reflective clothing and send off the child in time. Without time constraints, a child may perceive the road better and it will remain on the safe route.

Elementary school students wear safety vest on the bus

That's all right if the heavy school bag standing in middle school bus. Are you kidding me? Are you serious when you say that! What happens if the driver in safety vest has to brake suddenly? The recent students know now exactly. You have witnessed such a harmless knapsack can be quite dangerous.

The lesson with the consequences of an emergency stop is part of the curriculum of the bus school. This in turn is a very special kind of traffic education. The kept the two traffic police inspection educators Samberg, Police Chief Inspector Herald Hotelman, in the first and second grade students of primary schools in the city and county.

The bus school is primarily intended to contribute as a traffic education project to make trips in public transport for children and young people safer. The concept includes a roughly 25-minute theoretical, but also a 20-minute practical classes. In theory it was a danger to the bus stop and on the way there. What can go wrong here, the elementary school students themselves have developed. Now you know: You may here not push, wrestle, or play catch like - because otherwise it could easily happen that a child runs onto the roadway or crashes.

How important it is to wear bright and reflective clothing to be clearly visible to other road users, was as subject as not to jostle when boarding the bus of the appeal. How it's done correctly, the children have practiced: They went beautifully arranged and sat down on the bus always equal to the next free space - without blocking the satchel gear or seat - remained while driving sit and held on tight. And of course they always use from now on the seat belt, if there is one.

What happens in an emergency stop?
The theory is one thing - especially impressive is the thing but if you can try out what they have learned the same: This option provided the bus school for elementary school students. Who experienced a short drive what happens in an emergency stop? And showed clearly why you should not put in the aisle of the bus his schoolbag: The satchel slipped through the braking maneuvers by the driver. The children were pushed forward - which made all for a great wow factor. The bus school in Samberg by the company Linz and in the district by the company Herrmann, Lindner, Fuehrer, Heffner, Bruckner and Bayer and Krauss, who put their buses free of charge, was supported.

Overall, the bus school has 59 classes visited with 1,332 children. This special traffic safety training was also part of a crossing guard training with two transition classes of Leopold Middle School Samberg.

Reflective Technology: Night Eye emancipated from motorcycle

On 2 wheels, engine innovation! Originally developed by MACNA for motorcycle, the Night Eye system is quickly surprised and seduced. So much so that this high night vision technology is now validated and used by the giant Nike.

Jacket motorcycle and scooter reflective equipment MACNA Concrete Night Eye Remember what was there a year ago to the day: October 8, 2012, the Dutch supplier MACNA surprised everyone during the Frankfurt Motor Show with the Concrete Night Eye jacket. This innovative technology offers maximum visibility at night while maintaining a jacket (or pants) discreet during the day. Using tiny glass beads placed on textiles, Night Eye system we were literally amazed during our test, that the video (at the bottom of this article) shows clearly.

The bike: One area of real innovation
Nike Flash, a range using the Night Eye technology developed by MACNA for motorcycle given the effectiveness of the device, it is no wonder it is reused for other activities. And this is Nike, which supports the first with a reflective tape of clothing, called Flash Pack, and shoes for running to be as visible as possible in low-light conditions, the pedestrian being particularly vulnerable to vehicles. True, the rates are high for the moment but it is hoped that the popularization of this technology will make it quickly accessible.

From our side, we welcomed a concept emerged in the world of motorized two-wheeled found success in this way. This is, we believe, prove that the middle interests us has something to bring real solutions to security problems through innovative companies and taking the lead on legislation still perfectible and restrictive, as unfortunately demonstrated the imbroglio vest and retro-reflective armbands .

Mandatory retro-reflective facilities

It is official: as of 1 January 2013, motorcycle drivers and scooters of over 125 cm3 and motor tricycles over 20 hp should wear retro reflective equipment, under penalty of a fixed fine of 68 Euros and a withdrawal of two points!

The Ministry of Interior has published in the Official Journal Decree No. 2012-3 of 3 January 2012, specified by an order of January 3, 2012, on retro reflective equipment that will be mandatory from 1 January 2013 for drivers and passengers of a motorized two-wheelers over 125 cm3 " or L5e category vehicle with a power greater than 15 kW " (20.4 hp, Ed).

Not mandatory for cycling and 125
Specifically, if it is almost expressly MP3 drivers, this obligation does not touch - for now - the drivers of cyclists and 125 cm3. Which greatly surprising, since due to their smaller size and less powerful lighting, cyclists and 125 are even less visible than big cars...?

Reportedly, this was explained by the fact that these vehicles operate primarily in urban areas, where fatalities are fewer. On the other hand, users of mopeds and 125 have already been sufficiently "cooled" by previous decisions of the IRB, respectively Technical Supervision and training of 7 days...

There is however likely that this requirement with reflective material will extend in future to all two and three-wheel regardless of displacement, according to the same pattern as the helmet (first made compulsory in 1973 for large displacement out agglomeration, and then gradually extended to all PTWs).

Is my jacket compliant?
According to the decree published today in the Official Journal, the equipment can be retro-reflective "in one or more parts “but must always" be a total area of at least 150 cm2.” Waiting to see on our roads - with some perverse forward, let's face it! - the "security forces" out their tape measure, it is necessary to accurately measure all the reflective portions of your existing jacket to see if it will pass the 2013 bug ...

If retro reflective equipment does not comply it will be changing jacket or him "superimpose by any means" provided that it is “focused on the upper body, except the helmet, from the waist with the shoulder line, so as to be visible to other road users.”

Clearly, a Reflective Armband 30 cm by 5 slipped over the handle will do ... which is surprisingly not the case that distributed to journalists by the Ministry of Transport! With 25 cm of 5.8 (or 145 cm2), the official cuff "Road safety all responsible" (photo above) is simply not consistent...

By reducing its speed, a biker can gain precious meters on its stopping distance (remember, you need 85 m to stop at a motorcycle traveling at 90 km / h).

Warning passenger
Raise a passenger on his motorcycle or scooter is nothing trivial. Upon leaving, do not forget that the increased weight or raising the center of gravity have an impact on the behavior of your vehicle.
