Road safety: how to decrease the fatal bicycle accidents

Road accidents involving cyclists are becoming more numerous. In recent weeks, many athletes have paid the price and if some have managed with some injuries, others have not had the chance like Joe Guy, Michele, Remain Goyt or Gregory Simonyi again.

According to the latest figures released by road safety, 287 people were killed on the roads of France in April. And according to the organization, cyclists were particularly affected by this mortality sharply rising (+ 13% over the last 12 months, in a slippery year). As a result, as the good weather begins to make its appearance, it is important to remember the main rules to ride safely.

Thus, as explained by the Road Safety website, a bike in good condition and well equipped helps to ensure its safety and that of other road users. Some equipment is therefore mandatory: two brakes (front and rear), a yellow or white front light and a red taillight, a buzzer as well as reflex reflectors (red at the rear, white at the front, orange on the sides and on the pedals). In addition, at night or when visibility is insufficient, the cyclist is obliged to wear a retro reflective vest. Remember also that the wearing of helmets is mandatory for children under 12 years since March 22 last.

However, the respect of these rules is sometimes not enough in particular because the cohabitation with the other road users proves more and more difficult. Faced with this most worrying reality, a petition was launched on the Internet to alert Laura Flosses, the new Minister of Sports. And since its publication, it already counts more than 8,000 signatures. "Unfortunately, they are victims of people believing themselves more + strong + because surrounded by a bodywork while the cyclist only has his helmet for + body + Bike is already a physically difficult sport, no need to add stress for cyclists ", is it in particular written on Change.org. In parallel, a call to the rally was also launched by the movement my bike is a life. It will be held on June 17, Place de la Bastille in Paris.

Another initiative has also been launched to stop the hecatomb of cyclists on the roads. Contacted by France-Soir, wheel builder Michel has made the crazy bet to tour Europe by bike from 21 June. It aims to convince the 577 French MPs to pass a law to force motorists to overtake cyclists by going the other way, to leave a space of sufficient security. In parallel, he also develops safety equipment for cyclists, a kind of distance radar to warn them of the danger.

Yellow vest keeps NIMES Bikers safer on road

More than 200 Grad motorcyclists in reflective vest gathered at the Cottiers stadium before going on a short trip to the city center. In passing, some actions shocks and transgressions "for the good cause because it is a civic gesture that we realize".

The bike may be the vehicle of the future. Indeed, with the densification of traffic and the environmental problem, the bike seems to be the vehicle of the 21st par excellence. No fine particle rejected a wasp size that can be parked almost anywhere and takes up less space than a car. "Here too the statistics are against the bikers but the numbers show that there are fewer and fewer motorcycle deaths while there are more and more cars," said Jose, a biker Nimes.

As road safety imposes new laws and new principles necessarily understood by bikers, the French Federation of Bikers Anger disputes the implementation of traffic restriction measures allowing local and regional authorities to decree traffic areas restricted for reasons of pollution from which the owners of vehicles over 15 years old today and vehicles of more than 5 years by 2020 will be excluded. "These programmed prohibitions are accompanied by the obligation of the vignette Crib 'Air who will designate the law enforcement user authorized to circulate or junk, asked not to come "pollute" the city where he is yet forced to surrender "evoke leaders of the Grad federation in yellow vest. "It's pure discrimination!"

The police in yellow vest are easily recognizable

An agreement between the cantonal police of Geneva and the transport police was signed on Tuesday. It will notably strengthen the system on the Caravan Vaux route.

With their neon yellow vests, transport police officers (TPO) are easily recognizable. Deployed in railway stations, trains and, for five years, in public transport in Geneva, they will see their missions be reinforced from 1 July. A convention linking the TPO and the cantonal police of Geneva was indeed signed Tuesday on a platform of the station Caravan. What better to prepare including the opening of the future rail link.

Reinforced missions
In French-speaking Switzerland, such an agreement already exists with the cantons of Vaud and Neuchâtel. "But signing an agreement with Geneva was very important for us," said Colonel Jug Monarch, commander of the transport police. Specifically, his men (about fifty in the Lake Geneva region) will be able to handle the cases of violation of the rules of the traffic, violation of the Law on the weapons or detention and consumption of narcotics without needing to appeal to the Geneva police officers. Recall that these agents, holders of the federal police license, are armed, unlike municipal police officers in reflective vest.

The example of the final of the Cup
"Our collaboration on the ground with the transport police is not new, but the convention adds an institutional framework, says Monica Bouffant, head of the Geneva police. The benefits came at the recent final of the Swiss Football Cup. The transport police were present with us at the command post and their field agents provided us with essential information about what was happening inside and outside the trains. "

"Better working together"
"For once, we anticipate! With the opening in 2019 of the CEVA, the number and importance of the stations will increase. And we know, to have seen for example with the arrival of the tram Merino, a new line can also be a crime accelerator. It is therefore better to work together." The magistrate also said that discussions are ongoing with French neighbors concerning the interventions of various security actors and safety equipments - which also include customs and border guards - in the perimeter of the CEVA.

Too many cyclists circumnavigate their safety

In winter, it is not only cold, but dark. At the time of going to work or college, the sun is not always up and at night, at the time of debauchery, it is sometimes already lying down. This early December was therefore the ideal time to carry out the operations that took place Thursday and yesterday before the colleges.

The police station had put the package by hiring a dozen officials under the command of Major Luray, head of the public order and road safety unit, as well as officials of the municipal police of these three communes.

And the result is edifying: on the two days of this operation of road safety very targeted, since concentrated on bicycles, 60% of the 62 cycles controlled, were not in conformity. The drivers of these two-wheelers have all received convocation for a subsequent presentation of their bikes after compliance. All except one, who won the pompom, since it was verbalized for crossing red lights in the red phase, on a non-compliant cycle, with a phone held in hand. "The total ..." sighs Major Luray frowning.

"I am surprised by the lack of information from these two-wheelers. So we gave them an explanatory leaflet to drive safely, but also yellow vests for the purpose of being seen by other road users. These control operations will be renewed periodically ", warns the police still reassured by the" very good reception reserved for the agents by the schoolboys who understood that our operation was made for their security ". As for the heads of institutions, they applauded with both hands this intervention beneficial for all and could see that in the corridors, the students spoke only about that...

Mandatory equipment
Reflectors (retro reflective devices): red in the back, white in the front, orange on the sides and on the pedals. Wearing a certified retro-reflective vest is mandatory for all cyclists (and passengers) traveling outside the city, at night, or when visibility is insufficient, especially in the event of fog like the one that envelops Agent in recent days. The Code la route applies to cyclists and other users. Each offense is punishable by a fine.

Police organized a theme week of road safety

As every month, a theme week of road safety is organized by the prefecture and the police of the department of Saone-et-Loire to combine prevention and repression of the most risky and most accident-prone behaviors on the road.

As the rainy days and the first motorcycle outings approach, we invite drivers of all types of two wheels from Saone Loire to redouble their vigilance.
In 2016, road safety registered 625 deaths in France and 13,500 wounded on motorized two-wheelers. The Saone Loire deplored a particularly unfavorable road mortality, especially among moped riders and motorcyclists with 6 killed (2 moped riders and 4 motorcyclists).

In order to combat the unsuitable behavior of two-wheeled drivers and to avoid new human tragedies, the police and gendarmerie services of Saone Loire will reinforce the controls of the two wheels (bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles) in the department from 24 to 30 April 2017. In this context and for the purpose of prevention as well, police and police officers will make drivers aware of road risks and the sharing of the road.

A few simple rules of caution can help prevent new accidents:
Equipment / Equipment / Mechanics / Visibility
Service and systematic control of your motorcycle (visibility, braking and tires)
Standard biker equipment (helmet, jacket, gloves, pants, tailored shoes and safety vest)

Piloting ability
Gradual resumption of driving after a period of inactivity (recovery of the motorcycle, progressively longer distances traveled and respecting safety distances with the vehicle in front of you).

Respect for the Highway Code
Respect for the basic principles of the Highway Code applies to bikers; it is the guarantor of your safety. A motorcycle breaks a shorter distance than a car: FALSE. At 50 km / h, a motorcycle will travel 20 meters to stop while under the same conditions a car will only 17 meters. At 90 km / h, a motorcycle in reflective vest will travel 51 meters to stop while a car will only 43 meters 50.

A "smart vest" that allows stray dogs to stand guard

The safety jacket, equipped with a hidden camera, triggers an alert in case of unusual barking. What animals see is retransmitted on Smartphone residents. The goal: to give a place to these dogs often abused.

In Pucker, Thailand, stray dogs will put on their workwear. Often beaten, not fed and discredited by the population, these animals are still very numerous in the streets. A connected safety vest for dogs is currently being developed to change the look on them.

A subsidiary of Samsung, the advertising agency Ceil, and the Soy Dog animal protection foundation have incorporated a hidden camera and a neon computer into the fabric. The latter makes the distinction between conventional barking and those intended to give warning in case of unusual situation: an aggression, a fire, an accident or an intruder with suspicious behavior. A notification is sent to nearby Smartphone. On an application, residents see in real time what makes the dog react. "We do not think that any special training is necessary for animals. The connected jacket combines new technologies with their natural instinct. The only thing they will need is love and attention, "says project director in reflective vest at the online magazine Coconuts. The experimentation phase is launched.

In the long term, it would be a question of permanently changing the image of stray dogs in the country. "The problems of cruelty and the illegal meat trade are becoming more and more important in Thailand," he says. Capturing and locking up dogs cannot be a solution for the instigator of this device. "They have the right to continue living in freedom."

Operation yellow vests for the Spacer's on the road

Yellow vest required, in the first semifinal of Spacer's Toulouse against Nice. For the first time since 2007, the Spacer's take part in the semi-finals of the French League a championship. After leaving Tours, their pet peeve, in the quarter, the teammates of the stainless captain Sago will receive Nice this Friday (8.30pm), before returning Tuesday on the French Riviera, and a possible beautiful three days later in Toulouse.

Why Fluorescent safety Vest? Because the color of the jerseys of Toulouse is fluorescent yellow! Friday, the Palace must be fluorescent yellow! For this first leg, the club had an original idea: ask his supporters to come to the Poleis des Sports with safety vests, so fluorescent yellow color, and the colors of the club. What cause retinal detachment among the people of Nice?

A workforce to rebuild
On a purely sporting level, this meeting could be the last home, successful coach for six years, who will leave the club. Other important starts are expected; including those of Belgian point top Bram Van den Dries, best scorer in the championship (522 points) and international smuggler Antoine.
